Yesterday I went to drink soju with my friends for the first time.
I tried it, and it tasted disgusting... it tasted like rubbing alcohol.. like the one you put on someone before you get a needle shot. No that Ive tasted that but similar smell.
Everyone was having such a good time and I was just sitting there complaining about the disgusting taste. I have drank before but never soju. Is there a way to enjoy it? Do you personally like the taste of soju?

"it tasted like rubbing alcohol..No that Ive tasted that but similar smell." <--- True true. Usually if you smell something, most likely it will taste the same as the scent. IMO, it tastes like nail polish remover/a weaker form of vodka. Based on my experimenting, it tastes better if you mix it with coke(or a lemon kind of soda), fruit juice (orange, kiwi, grape, apple, anything really.). Another thing you can make is the yogurt Soju cocktail (learned from a friend). All you do is mix 1/3 soju, 1/3 of a citric fruit soda, and 1/3 liquid yogurt (flavor of your choice). And no, I don't drink. I like to taste samples. Well, I like to taste all sorts of things.

once youre two bottles in itl start tasting good =P

Anyway, yeah, i like drinking soju. Actually, i think youll find with koreans, drinking soju is pretty standard. maybe youll get used to it. Also, if you dont like soju, maybe youll like bek seju, which is less strong and has more of a nice taste maybe. personally i like soju more. Im not really sure where youre coming from or what kind of event you were at, but the style and atmosphere can affect how much you enjoy it.

In my experience i have found that the way many americans drink is a little boring. Actually, now i avoid drinkin with americans a little, 재미 없어=P I dont know, but the korean style is generally a lot more active and involved, more social and a lot more fun. For example, at my university we all get together, bring a lot of alcohol, (soju, beer, other liquor etc) and snacks. Then often times well sit in a circle and play drinking games for hours. to someone who hasnt done it, it is a little hard to explain how fun it is, but there are sooooo many different games, and we just cycle through them as we like. Theres also a lot of chants, like "OO이가 좋아하는 랜덤~게임!~무슨~게임! 게임~스타트!" for choosing the game, and "술이 들어간다 쭉 쭉 쭉 ..." for the loser, who has to down a shot all in one shot.

Anyway, my point is that the way that you drink can have a big impact on the experience as a whole. If you are just sitting around and talking, maybe youll focus more on the taste of your drink, and if you dont like soju taste, maybe youll really pay attention to that. But if youre involved in a social event where there is definitely a lot of drinking, but theres other fun stuff going on too, its not so important. a lot of alcohol is also an acquired taste anyway, a lot of people dont like it the first time, but grow to like it.

oh yeah, also, like the other guys said, theres a lot of styles of mixing soju with other drinks, to give it more taste. most often my friends and i mix with beer, but weve also tried lots of other stuff. anyway, if i was drinking for taste, i would take a glass of wine over a couple shots of soju. but in many social contexts, soju is perfect. in my opinion.

UGH! No I hate it!! And I honestly don't believe anyone who says they actually like the taste. It's not like whiskey or brandy where there's an actual "taste." No matter what brand, it always tastes like rubbing alcohol!

The only way I can "enjoy" it is to make somaek (soju+beer) bombs, which aren't too bad. But it's not my first choice of drink.

Outside of Korea, I always hated the taste of soju. Its gross, it burns going down, there was really no redeeming factors about it. Then I tried the 'Fresh' variety in Korea, and I have to say, that one was decent.

There's another common way to drink it, thats by mixing it with beer. One shot in a small glass of beer (colloquially named so-mek, a portmanteu of soju and mekju (beer)).

Good vodka doesn't have a taste really. Soju is very mild (like good vodka) but it's kinda like vodka meets sake...I like it personally.

No, and I don't like drinking kerosene either.

They seem to like it, but all Koreans do not like it.

It is more a social thing, people do not sit around and drink it alone.

If you drink enough you can not taste it, since you are drunk very soon.

No. No I do not. Whenever I drink it, it makes me feel sad inside.
